Meet the Teacher

All you need to know about Year 1

Habits of the mind
This year your children will be studying Habits of the Mind .They wil learn to use the thinking skills necessary to become successful people. You will hear them using the terms associated with the 16 Habits of the Mind. So don't be worried if metacognition (thinking about your thinking ) becomes their favourite word.

Importance of play

What is play?
Play is freely chosen, personally directed, intrinsically motivated behaviour that actively engages the child”. This definition draws closely on the work of Bob Hughes and Frank King. Play can be further described as follows: "Play can be fun or serious. Through play children explore social, material and imaginary worlds and their relationship with them, elaborating all the while a flexible range of responses to the challenges they encounter. By playing, children learn and develop as individuals, and as members of the community".I year 1 children will still have the opportunity to learn through play during Discovery Time.
